  The scientific goals of CASSE

  • Passive mode

    • Detection and localization of seismic activities

  • Active mode

    • Determination of acoustic P-wave velocity

    • Determination of acoustic S-wave velocity

The results of both measurements allow

      • calculation of elastic constants (Young's Modulus and Poisson Ratio) of the surface material through
        (Formeln)
(with Rho: Density; Cp, Cs: P, S-wave velocity)

      • operation of CASSE as a phased array  for detection of structures in the underground (boulders, cavities)

      • determination of the thickness of the surface layer (regolith)

    • Estimation of grain size by measuring the transmitter impedance and the frequency dependend attenuation

  • Optional functions

    • Usage of the accelerometers for navigation support and function control

    • Dust impact detection during descent phase

    • Touchdown detection system
